If you can laugh when you fall on your face, nobody can use that fall against you.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Embarrassment only holds power while you are trying to conceal it. The moment you acknowledge the fall openly, there is nothing left for anyone to expose, and the whole episode stops being interesting to everybody, including you. Laughing is not pretending it did not sting. It is declining to treat an ordinary mistake as a secret.

Next time something goes visibly wrong, name it in one light sentence and carry on with what you were doing. Do not over-apologise and do not explain at length. Notice how fast the room moves on with you.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did laughing at yourself take the sting out?
