The loudest one in the room is often the one least sure they belong in it.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Volume is often a bid for standing rather than a sign of having it. Someone who is confident they belong does not need to keep establishing it, which frees them to listen, ask, and be unimpressive for a minute. The constant talker is usually doing maintenance work on their own position, which is exhausting and fairly visible from outside. It earns more sympathy than irritation.

If you notice yourself filling every silence, let one pass and see what happens. If you notice somebody else doing it, ask them a question instead of competing.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When have you talked louder to cover feeling out of place?
