Copying the group just to fit in is letting them rent your decisions for free.

Going along is the default, because disagreement is expensive in the moment and conformity is invisible. The cost gets deferred into a long run of choices made by whoever happened to be nearest, adding up to a life shaped by people who were not thinking about your life at all. They are not doing anything wrong. They are simply not paying for what they are getting.

Find one decision this week where you can tell you are following rather than choosing, and choose differently, even trivially. The practice matters more than the particular decision.
