Hurt often asks for protection before it knows what protection should look like.
RESILIENCE
RESILIENCE
The first thing pain wants is for the hurting to stop, and it will grab whatever is nearest: withdrawal, an attack, a decision to trust no one again. These are not considered strategies; they are reflexes, and they often cost far more than the original wound. What you actually need usually takes longer to identify than the urge takes to arrive.
When you are hurt, let the impulse to protect yourself exist without acting on it immediately. Ask what would genuinely help, which might be a conversation, some distance, a night of sleep, or one person who will listen. Choosing the protection deliberately, rather than grabbing the first one available, is what keeps a wound from turning into a wall.
