Most monsters look huge because you only ever saw their shadow on the wall.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Distance and low light make things enormous, and avoidance keeps you at exactly the distance where they stay that size. The unopened envelope, the conversation you postpone, the number you have not checked, each grows in proportion to how long you refuse to look. What you are afraid of is usually the shadow rather than the object.

Go and look at one of them this week, in full light, with the actual figures. It will likely be smaller and more annoying than frightening. And if it is as bad as you thought, you will at least be dealing with its real size.
