If you coach someone and get mad they don’t get it yet, you forgot you didn’t get it yet once either.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Irritation at a slow learner is almost always amnesia. Whatever feels obvious to you now was once effortful, and the effort has been erased so cleanly that the skill looks like something you always had. That erasure is what makes teaching hard, not the person in front of you.

When frustration rises while you are explaining something, try to recall the specific week it was still confusing for you. Ask what finally made it land, and offer that instead of the summary you carry now. Patience here is not generosity, it is accuracy about how you learned.
