A group only moves as fast as its slowest person. Good leaders walk back and help instead of yelling from the front.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

A group’s pace is set at the back, which means the useful place to stand is usually not the front. Pressure applied from ahead adds shame without adding speed, while going back and working alongside the person who is behind removes the actual obstruction. Leading is a question of where the bottleneck is, not of where the view is best.

Find who in your group is struggling and sit with them for an hour. Ask what is in the way instead of announcing the deadline again. The whole group finishes when that person does.
