Hungry, tired, and annoyed is a lens, not a location. Don’t judge your whole life through it.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A bad state produces bad conclusions, and it never announces that it is doing so. Under tiredness and hunger everything looks slightly worse, your work, your friendships, your prospects. The thoughts feel like clear sight finally arriving, when they are a report on your sleep and your blood sugar.

Make a rule that you do not decide anything large while you are in that state. Eat, sleep, and see whether the thought survives the morning. If it does, take it seriously then, and if it evaporates you have learned something useful about when to trust yourself.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What conclusions do you reach only when tired and hungry?
