A savings goal is a number. A life goal is a Tuesday you’d actually enjoy. Know which one you’re working toward.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A number is easy to measure and easy to chase, which is why it often becomes the whole plan. Money is a means, though, and a means with nothing behind it will happily expand to fill the space where the aim should be. The real question is what an ordinary day looks like once the number arrives, because most of life is ordinary days.

Describe one weekday you would genuinely want: when you wake, who you see, what you spend your hours on. Then check whether what you are saving for actually builds toward that day or only toward the total.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would an ordinary Tuesday look like if you designed it?
