Boredom is the place your two selves finally meet: the one who performs and the one who just is.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Boredom removes the audience and the task at the same time, which leaves only you. The version of you that performs has nothing to perform for, so it thins out, and whatever is underneath gets a chance to speak. That meeting is uncomfortable at first, which is why most boredom now lasts about four seconds.
Let yourself be genuinely unoccupied for half an hour without reaching for a screen. Do not aim at insight. Just notice what your mind drifts toward when nothing has been arranged for it, because the drift is not random.
Which of your two selves shows up when nothing is happening?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
