Accept help freely from people who give freely. Be careful with help from people who invoice later.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Help comes in two kinds, and they are hard to tell apart in the moment it is offered. One is given and forgotten, the other arrives with an unstated account attached and gets called in later at a time that suits the lender. How someone talks about their past favours usually tells you which you are dealing with.

Notice whether a person keeps score aloud about other people. Accept freely from the ones who do not, and keep the ledger short with the ones who do. Asking plainly and early what they would want in return saves a great deal later.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which offer of help left you owing something later?
