A good friend makes your world wider. A bad one just makes their audience bigger.

A friendship either opens doors or closes them. Some people introduce you to things, bring you along and speak well of you when you are not in the room, and your world gets larger for knowing them. Others need you positioned as a supporter, and the range of what you are allowed to be slowly narrows. The difference shows up in whether you meet anyone new through them.

Ask whether you have grown more curious or more careful since this person arrived. Notice who celebrates the parts of your life they play no part in. Give more of your time to the ones who make room.
