Sometimes rebellion is just obedience pointed in the opposite direction.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Doing the reverse of what is expected is still being governed by the expectation. The person who must refuse every convention has no more freedom than the one who follows all of them; both are taking instructions from the same source, just with the sign flipped. Actual independence looks unremarkable, because it sometimes agrees.

Check whether you ever do the conventional thing when the conventional thing happens to be right. If you never do, the pattern is a reaction rather than a choice. Freedom includes the freedom to sometimes land where everyone else did, for your own reasons.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What are you refusing mainly because someone expected it?
