Overcorrection is the most common response to a bad experience, and it produces the mirror-image error with a better story attached. Too trusting becomes trusting no one, too cautious becomes reckless, too accommodating becomes rigid. Each is defensible as a lesson learned, and each has simply moved the problem to the other end.
When you change your approach after something goes wrong, ask whether you have found the right setting or just fled to the opposite extreme. The corrected version is usually somewhere in the middle and feels much less satisfying than the reversal, which is part of why people rarely stop there.
