Sometimes the identity built around surviving something struggles when survival is no longer required.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Getting through something terrible can require becoming a particular kind of person: vigilant, self-sufficient, always braced. Those qualities were earned and they were necessary. When the danger ends, they do not automatically retire, and a life without an emergency can feel disorienting to someone organized entirely around handling one.

Be patient with yourself if safety feels uncomfortable. Recognize that the traits that saved you were built for conditions that no longer apply and that setting some of them down is not a betrayal of what you went through. If it feels like losing yourself, that is worth taking to someone who can help you carry it.
