Expecting nothing protects you from disappointment and closes off the upside at the same time. If you never ask, never rely, never let anyone know what would help, then nobody gets the chance to show up for you, and the resulting evidence that people do not show up confirms the policy. The system is self-sealing.

Make one small request of someone this week. Something real but low-stakes. What you are testing is not whether they come through on this particular thing but whether your general expectation is actually accurate, and you cannot find that out without giving anyone the opportunity.
