If it’s your rule for the team, it’s your rule for you. No captain exemption.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

A rule you do not follow is not a rule, it is a preference you are enforcing on other people. Everyone notices the exemption, usually before you do, and what they learn is not that the rule is fake but that the standard depends on who you are. That costs more than the rule was ever worth.

Check which of your own expectations you quietly skip. Arriving on time, answering messages, doing the unglamorous part. Pick one and hold it visibly for a month. Nothing you say about standards travels as far as being seen keeping one.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which rule do you enforce and then quietly skip?
