Keep the friend who says “that outfit’s not it.” Honesty is rarer than compliments.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Compliments are easy to give and easy to collect, which makes them poor evidence about anything. Somebody willing to tell you a small unwelcome truth is taking a risk on your behalf, and most people will not take that risk twice if it goes badly. Friends like that are scarce mainly because of how they usually get treated.

Protect the ones you have by how you respond. Say thank you, take the note, and do not make them manage your reaction. A friend who can be honest about an outfit can be honest about something that matters.
