Running in the cold teaches you that miserable and capable can happen at the same time.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Discomfort and incapacity feel like the same signal, and they are not. Cold hands and a sour mood tell you nothing about whether your legs still work. Once you have run through a genuinely unpleasant hour and finished it, the link between feeling bad and being unable to continue gets weaker. You stop reading misery as a stop sign, because you now have evidence against it.

Do one thing this week while actively not enjoying it, and notice that it still got done. The run in bad weather, the chapter at eleven at night. Register how little the discomfort changed the actual output.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When were you thoroughly miserable and still completely capable?
