In rodeo, a qualified ride is eight seconds. Some of your hardest days only need to be survived in short pieces.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Eight seconds is a length chosen because it is survivable while still being hard. The structure does a lot of the work: you are not asked to last indefinitely, only to hold for a defined span, after which it is genuinely over. Hard days can be taken the same way once you stop treating them as one continuous block. Much of what makes them unbearable is the length you assign them.

When the next one looks impossible, choose a span you can clearly hold. The next class, the next hour of your shift, the drive home. Hold that, then stop and reassess rather than looking at the whole day.
