When the bad news comes, you get to feel it first. Planning can wait an hour.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A reflex kicks in to become useful immediately, to start arranging and deciding, partly because it feels better than sitting with what you have just heard. Doing that skips something you need, and it also produces worse plans, since the first hour is the worst hour for making decisions in. The feeling is not an obstacle to the planning. It is simply what comes first.

Give yourself an hour before anything practical. Sit, walk, call one person, say nothing useful. The arrangements will still be there afterwards, and they will be better for not having been made in the first shock.
