Facts have no responsibility to preserve the story you built before finding them.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
The world does not consult the account you built before you looked into it. Discovering something that undoes months of work, or a long-held view, or a story you told about your own life, is not the fact behaving badly. It is the fact doing what facts do, and the loss of the story is a real cost that changes nothing about its truth.
When new information collapses a position you had invested in, let yourself register the loss rather than immediately arguing with the evidence. Then rebuild. People rarely resist facts because they are unconvincing; they resist because something has to be given up.
