Mile three in freezing rain is where you learn your mind usually wants to quit before your legs have to.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

The urge to stop arrives long before the physical limit, and it arrives dressed as a physical limit. That is the useful discovery: the two are separable, and the gap between them is often enormous. Once you have continued through the first wave of wanting to stop and found your legs were fine, the next request to quit carries noticeably less authority. Your body usually tells the truth; the commentary does not.

Next time the urge turns up, give it ten more minutes before treating it as information. Not forever, just ten minutes. Most of the time it passes.
