Anybody can stay positive when they’re winning. Watch who stays decent when they’re losing.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Good behaviour in good conditions tells you nothing, because nothing is being tested. Character turns up in the fourth quarter of a blowout, in how someone speaks to the player who missed, in whether they still pass. That is also the version of you your teammates will remember long after the record is forgotten.

Pick one thing you will keep doing even when the game is gone: running back on defence, thanking the official, saying something steady to the youngest player on the floor. Decide it now rather than in the moment. Then watch who else does the same, because those are the people worth staying close to.
