When the wind picks up, sailors make the sail smaller. Doing less on a hard day can be the skill.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Reducing what you carry in bad conditions is not giving up, it is seamanship. More sail in heavy wind does not buy speed, it loses control, and the same holds for a day when everything is already difficult. Choosing to do less on purpose is a decision, and it is a different thing from collapsing.

On your next genuinely bad day, decide in the morning what you are dropping rather than discovering it at midnight. Keep the two things that matter and let the rest wait a day. Tell whoever is affected, briefly, so it reads as a choice rather than a disappearance.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What could you deliberately do less of today?
