If your conclusion cannot survive one inconvenient fact, it was never very secure.

A robust position can absorb an awkward fact. It may need adjusting, but it does not collapse, because it was built on more than one thing. If a single inconvenient detail would bring the whole structure down, the structure was resting on very little to begin with, and the reason it has stood is that nothing has pushed on it.

Test your important conclusions by asking what single discovery would undo them. If you can name one and it seems plausible, go and check it now rather than waiting for it to arrive at the worst moment.
