Admiring someone’s results is easy. Ask what their mornings look like.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Results are the only part of anyone’s life that is public. The routine underneath them is private, unglamorous, and usually the part you would actually have to copy. Admiration that stops at the outcome teaches you nothing, because outcomes are not instructions. What you want is the ordinary schedule that produced them.

Pick one person whose work you like and find out how their day starts, when they practise, what they turn down. Ask them directly if you can, and read closely if you cannot. Then borrow one piece of it for a week and see how it sits on you.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What does the person you admire actually do before noon?
