Status is borrowed from whatever room you’re in. Skill comes with you to every room.

Standing is granted by whoever is around, which means they can withdraw it. Being the best player on your team or the senior on your shift evaporates the moment the room changes, and rooms change every few years. What you can actually do travels, and it is the only part of your position nobody else is holding.

Ask which of your advantages would survive a move to a new school, team or city. Spend your effort on the ones that would. If you are near the bottom of a good room right now, that is a position too, and a useful one.
