Learning a language means sounding like a little kid for a while. That’s the price of a whole new door.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Nobody gets to skip the stretch where they sound like a small child. You will mix up genders, lose the word mid-sentence, point at things, and none of that is evidence you are bad at it. It is the process everybody who speaks two languages went through.

Decide in advance that you are willing to look silly for a few months. Talk to people rather than apps where you can, and let the mistakes happen in front of them. The embarrassment is the fee, and what it buys is a whole set of people you can talk to.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Would you accept months of sounding foolish for a new door?
