Lower your voice when an argument rises. It’s hard to keep yelling at someone who’s talking softly.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Arguments run on matching. Each person raises to meet the other, nobody decides to, and within a minute the volume is the only thing happening. Going quieter breaks the pattern because there is nothing to match, and shouting at somebody speaking normally starts to feel ridiculous to the person doing it.

Try it once this week, at home or on a shift, and go deliberately quieter at the exact point you want to go louder. Slow down too, since speed does the same work as volume. It is not giving in, and you will notice you can think again.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which rising argument could you slow by speaking more quietly?
