Words set to a beat often stick longer than words in a lecture. Rhythm gives memory a handle.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Memory holds onto shape as much as content. A rhythm and a rhyme tell you roughly how long the next bit is and what it should sound like, so if a word goes missing the pattern hands it back. That is why you can recall a chorus from years ago and not a paragraph you read this morning.

Use it on anything you have to memorise this week: say it in a pattern, put it to a tune you know, break it into a count. Say it out loud rather than reading it again, since rhythm only exists in sound. Odd and memorable beats accurate and forgettable.
