“I’m stressed” is too big to help with. “I’m behind on two assignments” is something someone can help with.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A feeling describes the weather, not the problem. People who want to help you hear the general version and have nowhere to put their hands, so they offer sympathy, which is nice and changes nothing. Naming the specific things turns a mood into a short list, and lists can be worked through, delegated or even crossed off.

Write down what is actually behind it, in items rather than adjectives, and you will often find there are three things and not forty. Then say one of them out loud to somebody. If the feeling stays big even after the list is handled, that is worth telling an adult you trust.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What exactly is behind the pressure you keep describing vaguely?
