Courage doesn’t need witnesses. Some of the bravest things you do, nobody will ever know about.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Much of what gets called bravery is partly performance, which means the unwitnessed version goes uncounted. Turning down something you wanted because it was wrong, telling the truth when a lie would have been invisible, getting up when nothing in you wanted to: none of it earns a word from anybody. It still changes who you are, which was always the point.

Keep a private list of the things nobody saw, if only so you have the evidence when you need it. Stop measuring your nerve by what people noticed. And when you do something hard with no audience, let that be enough.
