Firefighters work in pairs for a reason. Doing something dangerous solo isn’t extra brave; it’s extra risky.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

The second person is not there because one of you is weak. They are there because anybody can be knocked out, trapped or simply wrong about what they are looking at, and with nobody else present there is no correction and no rescue. Going alone does not add courage to the task, it removes the margin.

Take somebody with you for anything that could go badly: a climb, a late shift, a drive in bad weather, a confrontation. Tell one person where you are and when you expect to be back. If going alone is unavoidable, make the plan smaller rather than keeping it to yourself.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What are you handling alone that would be safer with someone?
