There is a line where accountability turns into the pursuit of someone’s pain for its own sake, and it is usually crossed without announcement. Once suffering is the point rather than the repair, no amount is ever quite enough, and the process stops being able to end. That endlessness is how you can tell.

Ask what would count as this being finished. If there is no answer, the goal has drifted, and drifting it back is worth doing for your own sake as much as anyone’s.
