Letting go of a goal that no longer fits you is braver than forcing it because you announced it.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

An announcement creates a debt to an audience. Once people know, continuing starts to serve your consistency rather than your life, and you can end up spending years on something chosen by a version of you who no longer exists. Stopping gets read as failure, so the expensive option looks like the respectable one and people keep paying for it.

Ask whether you would choose it today if nobody knew you had ever wanted it. If the answer is no, tell one person you have changed direction and let the rest find out slowly.
