Risky and scary aren’t the same. A speech feels scary but is low risk. A dare off a bridge feels fun but is high risk.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Feelings do not track consequences. Social exposure sets off every alarm you have and costs you almost nothing afterwards, while genuine physical danger among friends can feel light and funny right up until it does not. Your fear is calibrated for being watched, which was useful once and is a poor instrument for measuring what could actually happen to you.

Split the question in two next time. Ask how frightened you are, then ask separately what the realistic worst outcome is and whether it can be undone. Make the decision on the second answer and let the first one just be uncomfortable.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which of your fears is loud but actually quite safe?
