The hardest part of transformation is explaining less and changing more.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

The urge to explain a change is really an urge for it to be accepted before it has happened. Explaining invites debate, and debate returns you to the position you were trying to leave, usually with someone else’s reasoning added. Change tends to be established by doing rather than by describing. The account can come later, when there is something to account for.

When you feel the pull to justify a new direction, try saying less and continuing anyway. Give the change a few months of quiet operation. It becomes much easier to explain once it is a fact rather than a proposal.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where are you explaining your change instead of simply making it?
