Telling your parents about a mistake before they find out is scary. It’s also usually how you keep more of their trust.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

There are two separate things parents react to: what you did, and whether they heard it from you. The first has a fixed size. The second grows every day you sit on it, because something discovered later reads as something concealed, and that is what dents trust. Going first lets you be the person telling the truth rather than the person caught.

If something is waiting, pick a calm moment rather than the end of a bad day. Lead with the fact, skip the preamble, and bring one idea about how you will fix or pay for it. Their first reaction is rarely their final one.
