McCartney’s “Yesterday” had the working lyric “Scrambled Eggs.” Every great thing has a goofy placeholder phase.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Finished work hides its embryo. By the time anybody hears a song, the daft stand in has been replaced and the thing seems to have arrived complete, which is why your own messy draft feels like evidence against you. Placeholders exist because the tune needs something to hang on while the real words are still missing. Keeping a silly one is a working method, not a lapse.

Let yourself write the stupid version so the shape can exist. Sing any words that fit the rhythm and move on rather than stopping to find the right ones. Come back later, when there is a song to write words for.
