Take one class in something you’re bad at. Beginners see things experts walked past years ago.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Expertise works by compression. Once something is automatic you stop seeing it, which is why experts are often the worst people to explain the first ten minutes of anything. A beginner has no such blind spots and keeps asking the awkward questions the room forgot were questions. Being bad at something is a temporary and useful condition.

Sign up for one thing you have no talent for, even a free session at a community center. Write down every stupid question you have in the first hour before you lose them. Those notes tend to be more useful than anything you learn in week six.
