A bad set at an open mic lasts five minutes. The story of surviving it lasts a lot longer.

The cost of the attempt is smaller than it feels beforehand. Five uncomfortable minutes end, the room empties, and what remains is something you now know about your material plus a story you will tell for years. Fear inflates the length of embarrassment enormously. The lasting part is almost always the having gone up, not the going badly.
If something has been stopping you, put an actual number on how long the bad version would last. Then do it, knowing that is the whole exposure. Tell somebody afterwards and notice which part of the story you enjoy.
Did five bad minutes become a story you still tell?
