The cringe you feel at your old work is proof your eye got better.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Discomfort looking back is a measurement. You can only see what is wrong with an old piece because your standards moved, which means the wince is evidence of growth arriving in an unpleasant form. Somebody who feels nothing about work from three years ago has probably not changed much. Expect to feel the same way about today’s work eventually.

When the wince comes, name the specific thing your eye now catches that it missed then. Write it down as a skill you have. Treat today’s work gently, since a future version of you is going to wince at it too.
