Sand with the grain. Some things get smoother when you stop fighting how they’re made.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Wood has a direction built into it, and sanding across that direction tears the fibers instead of smoothing them. The same shape shows up outside the workshop. A person, a schedule, a skill each has a grain, and effort pushed against it leaves a rougher surface than no effort at all. Working with how something is made is not giving up; it is how the finish comes out clean.

Pick one thing this week that keeps fighting you. Ask what its grain is: when you actually have energy, how your body learns, what a friend responds to. Try one pass in that direction and see if it goes easier.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where have you been fighting instead of working with it?
