The difference between practice and play is whether you’re fixing anything.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Running through something you can already do is play, and it is enjoyable and almost inert. Practice points at a specific weakness and works on it, which means failing repeatedly in a small area, and that is why it is less pleasant and far more productive. Both are worth doing, and confusing them is how people log hours without improving. Asking what you repaired sorts them apart.

Before your next session, name the one thing you intend to fix. Spend the first two thirds on it and play afterwards. Keep a note of what you worked on, so practice stays distinguishable from fun.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

In your last session, what did you actually try to fix?
