Not every free hour needs to be productive. But you should know which hours are rest and which are hiding.
RESILIENCE
RESILIENCE
Rest and avoidance can look identical from outside and feel very different afterwards. Real rest leaves you a little restored and willing to start again, while hiding leaves you tired, vaguely guilty and still facing the same thing. The problem is not the empty hour, it is not knowing which kind you are having. Naming it takes most of the guilt out of the real rest.
Before your next free stretch, say what it is for. If it is rest, take it properly, without the books nearby and without apologizing. If you catch yourself hiding, name what you are avoiding and give it fifteen minutes first.
Can you tell your real rest from your avoidance lately?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
