Complaining about the schedule is free. Offering a fix is what gets you asked next time.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Complaints cost nothing to produce, which is why they carry so little weight. A proposal is different: it shows you understood the constraints, took the trouble to think, and are willing to be held to something. That is also why the person with a suggestion gets asked next time, while the person with a grievance gets avoided. The difference is effort, not attitude.

Next time you are unhappy with how something is arranged, work out one specific alternative before you speak. Say what the problem costs and what you would do instead. Offer to take part in the fix, which is the part that makes people listen.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Are you complaining about something without offering a better plan?
