Everyone falls out of a turn in ballet class. The ones who improve reset quickly and don’t make it a story.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Mistakes are normal and the recovery is what varies. Falling out of a turn takes a second, while building a story about it, replaying it and carrying it through the rest of the class takes the whole hour and costs you everything that came after. The people who improve fastest treat the error as a fact and go again. Keeping the incident small is a trainable skill.

When you next mess something up in practice, reset and go again within five seconds, before the commentary starts. If you need to think about it, do that at the end of the session. Watch how much more of the class you keep.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

How long do you narrate a mistake before getting back up?
