Respect tends to follow usefulness in people’s minds, so the workers who keep a place running are often the ones nobody addresses by name. Choosing to do it costs nothing and sits outside the usual exchange, which is exactly why it registers. Somebody who is invisible all day notices immediately when they are not. This is one of the few genuinely free good things available to you.

Learn the name of one person at your school or job who gets overlooked, and use it when you see them. Say good morning first rather than waiting. Keep doing it after the novelty wears off.
