The older brother in the prodigal story never left home and still missed the party.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

You can be in the right place the whole time and still miss what it was for. The brother who stayed had the house, the fields, the proximity, and he ended up standing outside the one event everybody else was glad about, holding an accurate list of everything he had done right. Being compliant is not the same as being present. Resentment about what others got forgiven for will keep you at the edge of your own home.

If you are the one who did everything right, check what you are quietly expecting in return. Then go into the party anyway.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Has doing everything right left you resenting someone’s welcome?
